Šibenik is the first in Croatia to get a building registration system

first_imgEach of the more than 2.000 buildings located in the protected city center of Šibenik will soon have its own public access. ‘ID card’with all important data, photographs, and guidelines for restoration. It is a unique project, not only in Croatia, but also in the world. A project that preserves our heritage and what we are – and that is the greatest value of every nation, including ourselves. And this is exactly one of the goals of the project of the Šibenik Association of Citizens, Society for the Preservation of Šibenik Heritage Juraj Dalmatinac, entitled: “Information system of the cultural and historical ensemble of Šibenik”.The project has been intensively worked on for the last two years, and the first and the most difficult step was the careful recording of all buildings in the city center. In cooperation with the Society of Architects Šibenik, ie the youth section of the Society of Architects Šibenik (SOBA), the registration of the first 300 buildings was initiated in accordance with the guidelines and recommendations of the Conservation Department at the Ministry of Culture. After six months of work, the Juraj Dalmatinac Society and DAŠ collected all the necessary data for the first 300 buildings. “About ten members of the Society of Architects Šibenik participated in the project, and in addition to the records of the current condition of the buildings, information on guidelines for potential renovation was collected. The content of the building identification card, which can also be called a ‘building identity card’, contains general information: cadastral parcel number, area, address and house number. Then there are data on protection with markings of cultural property and protection system, and a description of the building with a prominent time of construction, purpose, number of storeys, data on the roof… “Points out Nikola Grubić, president of the Association” Juraj Dalmatinac. In addition, on the website that will be available for public use, with a simple click of the mouse for each of the buildings, those interested will be able to find valid provisions from the GUP of the City of Sibenik, photos of all street facades, cadastral situation and, most importantly, guidelines for renewal. This will ensure that potential restorers of buildings in the core should not violate conservation guidelines by using unsuitable renovation materials (roofs, facades, windows, doors, etc.), or by otherwise damaging protected buildings. This project is the first of its kind in Croatia and beyond. Its applicability is extremely important and becomes very interesting to other cities in the country and abroad. That this is the case is confirmed by the expressed interest of some of our cities on the Adriatic coast and one from neighboring Slovenia and Italy, Grubić points out and adds that currently the focus is only on Šibenik because the project remains to process several hundred more buildings. “We launched this project solely to protect our core, and to help our citizens have as few problems as possible during reconstruction.”Concludes Grubić.I constantly emphasize that the very essence of tourism is authenticity, and that I have to start respecting our culture, heritage, identities… because that is exactly our greatest tourist value. The stone heart of Šibenik is what makes the city of Šibenik, ie a tourist destination, unique, and this is an excellent example of sustainable development and preservation of our tradition and heritage. If we look at the bigger picture, it is unfortunate that under the prism of development we are constantly copying others, and we have exactly what others want – a unique and authentic story. Take a look around and ask yourself how hotels are built on our coast, I mean the design of the same? Do they fit into our unique space and ambience? Do we have any guidelines on how many floors and widths they can have, what material…This is not about banning investments or hotels, private capital looks exclusively at its own interest and dances within the framework we set for it. This is about sustainable and strategic development. We are irreversibly destroying our destinations with wild construction in the past, and now at the same pace without any framework and care, we allow the construction of hotels and apartments without any rules of the game, ie to follow the guidelines to better fit into the space.A copy is a copy, and the original will always have its value as well as the motive for coming. And that is why this example, both as a project and as a Society for Heritage Preservation, is one of the most important projects in Šibenik. Because if we turn into copies, the question arises why people would travel. Do not forget that the very motive of tourism, ie travel, is to get to know new ways and cultures of living. It is up to us, and the biggest responsibility is not on the Ministry of Tourism or the CNTB, but on the cities and the local population, which are most responsible for the development of cities and tourist destinations.Let us be proud and preserve our identity, history, heritage, culture… because these are our greatest values. Let us respect ourselves, so that others may respect us. We must not cut the branch on which we sit and that is why strategic development and sustainable tourism is the only right path of development. It’s all up to us.&lt;br /&gt;<br />

Changes coming to elk hunting in East Kootenay

first_imgThe Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations has announced changes to the elk hunting season in the East Kootenay. For this fall, the elk hunting seasons in the South Trench of the Kootenay region will be as follows: General Open Season for antlerless elk in 4-03 Zone X (includes portions of 4-2 to 4-5 and 4-20 to 4-22), Sept. 20 to Sept. 30 – CLOSED. Senior/youth season for antlerless elk in 4-03 Zone X (includes portions of 4-2 to 4-5 and 4-20 to 4-22), Sept. 10 to Sept. 14 – CLOSED. Senior/youth season for antlerless elk in 4-26 Zone X (includes portions of 4-25 and 4-26), Sept. 10 to Sept. 19 – CLOSED. For a detailed map of Zone X, please consult Page 52 of the 2012-2014 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis at: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations/All other elk hunting seasons in the Kootenay region remain unaffected. The elk hunting seasons were initially expanded in 2010 to help reduce crop damage in the South Trench area. However, crop damage has persisted, despite a decrease in elk numbers. The ministry is considering a number of site-specific measures in those agricultural areas hardest hit. Local stakeholders are currently reviewing options to ensure elk are managed sustainably and in a manner that meets the interests of all involved. This year’s hunting season closures are guided by the Kootenay Elk Management Plan that called for a 20- to 40-per-cent reduction to local elk populations. Elk populations now have been reduced 35 per cent, and lowering the elk harvest is now needed to maintain elk numbers at the management target agreed to in the plan, and to avoid continued population declines.Population surveys conducted in January 2013 estimate there are 7,509 elk in the South Trench area. The 2008 population for elk in the South Trench was estimated at 11,580.last_img read more

I want my team to play in a certain way and I give them little pointers here and there. It’s a work in progress, that’s what it is. It’s going to take time as the players go from one manager and the details he wanted and I have a little bit of a tweak. It will improve as time goes on.”On Pogba, he added: “It was great to see him score two goals and he has created the goals last week at Cardiff, and now he scores them himself, so he will be even better for getting two lots of 90 minutes now and he will be fitter and fitter and improving with the team. We looked tired towards the end and now it is important over the next two or three days that we recover and get ready for Bournemouth.” About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

Hudsons Bay in jointventure talks with European retailer Signa Holding

first_imgTORONTO – Hudson’s Bay Co. is eyeing a joint venture in Europe with an Austrian department store heavyweight it previously rebuffed. The Canadian retailer said it is in talks with Signa Holding GmbH, a European company that made an unsolicited bid late last year for HBC’s German operations, but withdrew the offer earlier this year after it was rejected by the HBC board because it undervalued the business.A statement HBC released Friday said the pair recently signed a non-binding letter of intent “with respect to the exploration of a potential joint venture,” but noted that “there can be no assurance that any such discussions will ultimately lead to a transaction” and that any deal would still be subject to board approval and third-party consents that are out of HBC’s control.Signa owns Kardstadt, a department store that sells everything from apparel to household appliances, while HBC runs similar businesses overseas called Galeria Kaufhof and Galeria INNO.A potential deal between the two could pave the way for a German department store monopoly and signals that HBC still sees value in Kaufhof, despite its European operations seeing a 6.6. per cent decrease in overall comparable sales in the last quarter.HBC scooped up Kaufhof from German retailer Metro AG in 2015 for 3 billion euros ($4.5 billion CDN).HBC declined to make a representative available to discuss the potential deal it is eyeing, but said it released a statement Friday in an effort to quiet recent reports suggesting that it had signed a binding agreement to sell or combine business or properties. It said it publicized the exploration of a deal with Signa because it believes “it is prudent to advise stakeholders.”Some of those stakeholders have been tussling with HBC for years now, especially given the retailer’s rocky recent performance that included a $400-million loss in the first quarter of 2018, compared with a loss of $221 million a year ago.The most outspoken of the stakeholders has been Jonathan Litt, chief investment officer and founder of activist investor Land & Buildings Investment Management, who has repeatedly complained that HBC is really a real estate company, not a retailer, that has failed to outline a plan to unlock the “substantial real estate value trapped in the company.”Last month, he released a note saying HBC should look towards American department store chain Macy’s as HBC’s underperfomance “has become even more pronounced.”“Hudson’s Bay could learn a lot from the way Macy’s has built a credible real estate team to help drive its turnaround,” Litt wrote, at the time. “One could even reasonably ask whether the most logical course for HBC at this point would be an acquisition by Macy’s as opposed to trying to play catch up.”While Litt has been outspoken about the company’s real estate, a Lands & Building spokesperson declined to comment Friday about its take on HBC being in talks with Signa.Companies in this story: (TSX:HBC)last_img read more

Alaska Highway reopens north of Liard Hot Springs after fuel truck spill

first_imgFORT NELSON, B.C. — The Alaska Highway has reopened between the Liard Hot Springs and the Yukon border after a fuel truck spill closed the road for most of the day yesterday.According to the B.C. Ministry of Environment, the transport truck carrying roughly 55,000 litres of fuel was involved in a single vehicle incident at around 1:00 on Wednesday morning at Mile 543. No leak was reported at the time of the crash, but in an update at 7:45 a.m., the RCMP confirmed that the load was leaking. The responding Environmental Emergency Response Officer attended the incident site and determined that a fuel compartment in one of the truck’s two trailers was punctured. The Ministry estimates that 4,500 litres of fuel spilled to the environment, and it appears to be contained to the soil surrounding the highway. During a flyover, the officer did not see any sheen on the Liard River. However, it was noted that there are only pockets of visible water on the river due most of it being covered in ice. A multi-agency conference call took take yesterday evening to discuss future response plans. The Ministry said it will provide another update when new information becomes available.last_img read more
