first_imgSumner Newscow report — A Wellington Fire/EMS investigation has determined that a structure fire at 518 North Blaine in Wellington this morning was probably a case of arson.“There are some clues that lead us to believe by the way the fire burned and some items left at the scene, that this fire was intentionally set,” said Tim Hay, Wellington Fire Chief. “We are currently interviewing people for this investigation.”Wellington firefighters responded to a call at 3:39 a.m. Thursday of a small 600-square-foot house burning on Blaine Street, just north of U.S. 160 between 10th and 11th Street. Hay said the front attic portion was on fire when firefighters arrived on the scene. There were flames coming through the roof of the small one story home.Firefighters entered the home to search for occupants and as they were canvassing the structure, the roof began to collapse. They left the burning structure and went into a defensive position until a large portion of the fire could be extinguished from the outside. No one was hurt at the scene. The occupant of the small house, Tommie Barnett, was not there at the time of the fire. It is owned by Richard Forrest, according to the press release. There were 15 personnel at the time including Wellington Police, Sumner County Emergency Management, Wellington Electric and Kansas Gas. Mutual aid was received from Fire District 9 in Mayfield. There was one ambulance, three fire engines, one aerial and two administrative pickups at the scene. The fire was contained to the structure.Hay estimated the house at a total loss and valued at $7,000. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password! If it was your property wouldn’t you want all of the resourses possible? Report Reply -2 Vote up Vote down JustMe · 335 weeks ago “Is it just me or……” Yup, I think it’s JustMe. Report Reply +2 Vote up Vote down nonya · 335 weeks ago In my opinion I would rather they spend the fuel and have it there if needed instead of standing there waiting on another truck or piece of equipment to get there….beside what would have happened if it had spread to surrounding houses Report Reply 1 reply · active 335 weeks ago +1 Vote up Vote down Joyce · 335 weeks ago My thoughts were the same. There were houses on either side of the one that was burning weren’t there? “Just me”, of you lived in one of them, would you have been demanding that the FD protect your home, even if it meant bringing in more equipment? Just my thoughts…. Report Reply -1 Vote up Vote down anonymous · 335 weeks ago dollars** Report Reply 0 replies · active 335 weeks ago Post a new comment Enter text right here!
