Austin sealed a spot in the semifinal round at the 2019 Southland Conference Volleyball Tournament Friday afternoon with a 3-0 win over No. 8 New Orleans inside Farris Gym in Conway, Ark. Senior outside hitter Xariah Williams led the Ladyjacks with 11 kills, while the SFA defense combined for eight blocks to limit the Privateers to a .165 hitting percentage.Set OneNew Orleans jumped out early with five-straight points before the Ladyjacks found their way onto the scoreboard. The Privateers held on to the advantage until a kill by SFA’s Taya Mitchell evened the score at 8-8. Corin Evans then followed up with back-to-back kills, giving the Ladyjacks their first lead of the match. Rhyan Rand brought UNO level once again with a service ace to lock the score at 12-12. Danae Daron responded with a kill on an assist from Margaret Dean, giving SFA its final lead of the set. Dean closed out the set with her first ace of the day, downing UNO 25-17. Stephen F. Austin was boosted by Williams and Evans who combined for 10 of the Ladyjacks’ 16 kills. Ann Hollas also tacked on an ace of her own to help boost the SFA hitting percentage to .364, while Madelynn Miller collected nine digs.Set TwoThe two teams traded blows to start the second set, tying the score seven times within the opening 14 points. New Orleans then jumped ahead 14-12 on a kill from Brianna Vega, followed by an ace from Rand. The lead was swapped three more times before SFA finished off the set 25-23 on an ace from Ariana Pagan. Williams continued her explosive offensive throughout the second set with five more kills on 10 swings to bring the Ladyjacks to 28 kills.Set ThreeStephen F. Austin closed out the afternoon with a 25-21 third-set victory following five kills and five assists from Hollas, who registered a .833 hitting percentage in the final set. The Ladyjacks overcame a .167 team hitting percentage with a huge defensive effort that was highlighted by five team blocks and 20 digs.Stephen F. Austin advances to the semifinal round where they will take on the match-four winner between No. 4 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 5 Central Arkansas.
