Real Madrid is in mourning again. In the morning of this Thursday Goyo Benito has passed away at the age of 73, an icon of Madrid from the 1970s, where he made a name for himself as a brave defender and disputed 420 games. A long period between 1969 and 1982 in which ex-soccer player from Toledo conquered eleven titles with the white shirt: six leagues and five Copa del Rey. Benito had long suffered from an illness. Gregorio Benito Rubio (10-21-1946, 2-4-2020) was born in Puente del Arzobispo (Toledo), arrived at the White House with 17 years and before succeeding in Madrid he was loaned to Rayo to get some fun. He debuted in white on October 26, 1969 in Atocha against Real Sociedad and that day he played left-back and shared band with Gento. That day he lived his first anecdote with the current honorary president. After receiving a bad pass from Benito, Gento said to him: “At the bottom of the lad, at the foot”, to which Benito replied: “As you say Don Francisco.”Benito would end up being a Real Madrid institution and nicknamed Brave Ax, for his temperament as central. A bravery that led him to suffer numerous injuries during his sports career, in which had to be operated eight times. He also had an important presence in the National Team, where went international 22 times. After retiring, he went on to perform various jobs in the entity until his final retirement a few years ago. Rest in peace.
