Volek will be making his 10th start today after starting eight times last season for an injured McNair. “I’ve said this for a long time now, even though Steve is the starter, I still prepare myself like I’m the starter,” Volek said after practice Friday. “So, I’m just going to go out there and play my game.” The Tennessee Titans flew to Arizona without injured Steve McNair, giving backup quarterback Billy Volek his first start this season today against the Cardinals. The Titans officially downgraded McNair from questionable to out Saturday after listing him as questionable each day because of back and ankle injuries. He missed each practice, including Thursday when he was excused for personal reasons, and sat out two sessions last week. Howry is a third-year pro out of Oregon. He played in four games this season, returning 12 punts for 78 yards, an average of 6.5 yards. Farwell is an undrafted rookie out of San Diego State. He impressed the team in the preseason with his tireless work ethic, and coach Mike Tice has always had an affinity for rookie free agents. Tice went undrafted himself before catching on with Seattle to start a 14-year playing career. Jordan wants ball: LaMont Jordan knows the reason he joined the Oakland Raiders: to complement Randy Moss and help turn around one very frustrated franchise. Now, sitting at a disappointing 1-4, Oakland considers today’s game with Buffalo a must-win. Moss is probably out this week after the receiver bruised his ribs, strained a groin and bruised his pelvic area in a hard fall while trying to make a leaping catch late in the first quarter of last Sunday’s 27-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers. That’s where Jordan comes in. He wants more carries, and made that clear this week. The only game Oakland won – 19-13 over Dallas on Oct. 2 – Jordan ran 26 times for 126 yards and a touchdown. He believes if he gets more touches, he can have similar performances every week. “I have said it before, 23 to 26 carries and I’ve gotten the job done,” Jordan said. “And if you look at our record, 1-4, our one victory was 26 for 126. To win games in the NFL you have to run the ball.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! He became only the fourth quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 400 yards in consecutive games. Rams activate Smoker: The St. Louis Rams moved quarterback Jeff Smoker from the practice squad to the active roster for today’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Smoker, cut in training camp then re-signed last week to the practice squad, got a second chance when Marc Bulger injured his shoulder in a loss Monday night to the Indianapolis Colts. The Rams released offensive tackle Matt Willig. “Well, we really had a need,” interim coach Joe Vitt said. “He knows the system and we have to go with three quarterbacks.” Vikings release Howry: The Minnesota Vikings released punt returner Keenan Howry and signed linebacker Heath Farwell off the practice squad on Saturday.
