first_imgMani Shankar Aiyar’s witticisms have left the Congress at its wit’s end.Unable to figure out how to deal with its enfant terrible – whose latest utterances have kicked up a St Stephen’s versus the rest controversy – the party on Tuesday sought to downplay the matter. It, however, tried to send a subtle message to him by underlining the need to be humble and civilised. When asked about the Stephanian Aiyar’s disparaging comments against Hansraj College and Kirori Mal College ( KMC), AICC spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said: “The Congress does not get into all these details, but the language of civility must be there at every discourse, at every forum.” Congress sources said being a senior leader, former Union minister and Rajya Sabha MP, the party high command had given Aiyar a long rope. Also, since he has not violated the party discipline as such, it can’t take action against him. All it can do is to deny him any major organisational post or a ministership in the event of a cabinet reshuffle in future.Aiyar’s acerbic tongue has embarrassed the Congress many times. In his latest, he left the partymen squirming with his unsavoury comments against sports minister Ajay Maken. In an interview, Aiyar said he did not believe that a BA- Pass student from Hansraj College could use a word like ‘ dichotomous’. His remark kicked up a row, but Aiyar was unapologetic. On Monday, he once again mocked not just Hansraj but also KMC, saying Amitabh Bachchan was its “sole achievement”. His remarks caused an outrage and St. Stephen’s principal Valson Thampu called up his Hansraj counterpart to douse the fire.advertisementlast_img
