Stay on target Rutger Hauer, ‘Blade Runner’ Actor, Dies at 752019 in Sci-Fi: What Movies, Games, and TV Told Us Will Happen This Year Blade Runner 2049 takes place 30 years after Ridley Scott’s celebrated original. That’s a lot of time to skip over. So, the director of the new film, Denis Villeneuve reached out to two artists to create shorts depicting some of the bigger events that occurred between the two films. The first two were directed by Ridley Scott’s son, Luke. “Blade Runner 2036: Nexus Dawn” gave us an origin story for Jared Leto’s character, Niander Wallace. The second, “2048: Nowhere to Run,” told us a bit more about Dave Bautista’s character, Sapper. The third and final prequel dropped today on Crunchyroll, and it might be the coolest of the three.“Blade Runner Black Out 2022” takes place only three years after the first film, and unlike Luke Scott’s two shorts, it’s animated. That’s because this short comes from director Shinichiro Watanabe, who you might know from Samurai Champloo or Cowboy Bebob a.k.a. the greatest anime of all time. (Fight me.) It’s available on Crunchyroll for free, though you’ll need a subscription if you want to watch in HD. If 480p is fine for you, no need to subscribe. If the prospect of a 16-minute short from the guy behind Cowboy Bebop set in the world of Blade Runner isn’t enough to entice you, maybe this making of trailer will do the trick. And that’s only a small glimpse of how cool this thing is. It tells the story of a rising human supremacy movement and the incident that led to the banning of Replicant production. It’s a fun, affecting short tale that is absolutely worth your time. Also, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Watanabe still knows how to animate a good fight scene. The action in this short is reminiscent of some of the best Cowboy Bebop episodes. His characters move and flow with such style. Even in the most fast-paced intricate fight scenes, the action is easy to follow. And the way he recreates Ridley Scott’s futuristic Los Angeles is just beautiful. If this short has you craving more Blade Runner, you won’t have long to wait. Blade Runner 2049 arrives in theaters October 6.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
