Flybe has announced that London Gatwick will become its 14th base following the introduction of new flights to Dusseldorf.The new route, which comes into effect on June 22nd, will operate three times a day during the week, once on Saturday and twice on Sunday.Flybe, which is Europe’s largest regional airline, has increased its presence at the UK’s second-busiest airport over the last year-and-a-half after it introduced new flights to Aberdeen, Newcastle and Newquay.It is now the third-biggest slot-holder at London Gatwick.Mike Rutter, Flybe’s chief commercial officer, said the airline’s expansion showed that it is among the airport’s “key players”.”The initial basing of one aircraft with 33 new staff will make Gatwick one of our most important airports and our 14th base,” he said.”Flybe is gaining a reputation as an airline that bucks the trend in these challenging economic times and this announcement is a confident statement by the Flybe board in our ability to continue our growth.”The carrier said last week that it was forecasting an eight percent increase in passengers over the Easter period.
